The Reason Some Rooms in Your Home Get Hotter Than the Others in the Summer!

One of the most frequent questions that we receive is, “why are certain rooms in my house hotter than others in the summer?” This is something that homeowners are always looking for a solution to. The good news is we can always solve this. Homeowners normally blame this temperature imbalance on their windows but the truth is that more often than not, that is not the main contributing factor. Windows may contribute to a hot room if they are directly sun struck with no shading (by things like trees, shade screens, film or awnings) but there’s almost always an additional underlying issue.

Let's take a closer look at the three key factors that can contribute to certain rooms being warmer than others in your home.

Duct leakage
If there are holes in your duct system the conditioned air that is running through the supply side gets pushed into the attic before it makes it into your home. This means that you’re paying for pointless conditioned air and that your hot room is lacking the cold air that it needs to stay comfortable.

Poor duct configuration and sizing
If duct work it undersized or dented, your system won’t receive the amount of air that it needs. If the air in the duct system is being slowed down or blocked, it deprives your home of the necessary air it needs.

Missing, inadequate, or misaligned insulation
Lacking insulation or having it placed incorrectly could be fatal to the comfort of a room. It’s not enough to simply pump more insulation into your home, it must be installed correctly. In order for insulation to reach its full potential it must be touching the surface completely. This means no bald spots and no insulation hovering above the surface. Common trouble areas for insulation include: dropped soffits, knee walls, fireplaces and chimney areas, and arches.

A home energy audit is a great way to identify what the areas of improvement are in your home, especially if you’re trying to tackle that hot room issue. Call us today at (602) 926-1650 or visit us at http://www.greenintegrateddesign.com to learn more or to schedule your energy audit!
