Alternatives to Solar Panels

There’s a huge attraction toward solar panels for a reason. The source of “free energy” has been growing in popularity because solar power is a great way to reduce not only your energy bills but also your carbon footprint. Although this energy alternative is definitely something to keep in mind, it’s important to fully consider this investment. Rebates are available for solar through SRP and APS, but the cost alone for having solar installed on your home can cost owners up to $9 per watt, meaning that a 5,000 W system could run you $35,000, and that’s just for installation!

The truth is that, although solar energy use is a great advancement on homes and definitely something to consider, there are more cost effective methods to cutting down your carbon footprint and saving money on your energy bill.

Trane's Air Conditioning Promotion

Trane's Spring promotion just kicked off this year offering great financing terms or trade in allowances for heating and air conditioning systems.  Only the qualifying Trane air conditioners listed below are eligible for the promotion, which ends May 31st. Here are all the details.

Buy Now, Pay Over Time

Special financing is available for with the current Trane rebate promotion. All units require a Nexia smart thermostat, which Green ID will throw in for free for any qualifying unit.

To be eligible for 0% interest for 60 months, Trane units that qualify are:
  1. XV20i, SEER 20 variable speed compressor
  2. XV18, SEER 18 variable speed compressor
  3. XL18i, SEER 18 variable speed compressor
What is SEER? The efficiencies of air conditioners is rated by it's SEER, the higher the SEER, the more efficient it works and the lower your energy bills will be.  The minimum SEER that code allows today is SEER 14.  These HVAC systems are all high efficiency units with SEERs, with very quiet compressors and will cut the summer cooling bills the most.  If you plan on living in your home more than 10 years, a variable speed system is recommended for the best comfort and energy savings.

To be eligible for 0% interest for 48 months, Trane units that qualify are:
  1. XL16i, SEER 16 dual stage compressor
  2. XR17, SEER 17 dual stage compressor
  3. XR16, SEER 16 dual stage compressor
  4. Minisplit systems from SEER 16 to SEER 38
  5. Package roof top units XL16c, SEER 16
  6. Package roof top units XL15c, SEER 15
  7. Package roof top units XL14c, SEER 14
To get 48 months at 0% financing, the requirements relax a little with Trane offering promotions on lower SEER systems.  The dual stage compressors allow the unit to run at two speeds, one high and one low.  The low speed will run mostly in the mornings and evenings when it's not 120 degrees outside in Phoenix.  The high speed will kick in when it does get 120 degrees.  This saves a lot of energy and money compared to the single stage units, that operate at 100% all the time.  Then compare that to our variable speed units that have 500 stages they are use, rather than 2 and you'll see even more savings.

How much savings will I see from higher SEER units?

I like using this SEER chart below to illustrate an approximate number.  You can approximate your existing air conditioner's SEER as a SEER 13 at best, SEER 12 for AC's older than 10 years old, SEER 11 for AC units older than 15 years old, SEER 10 for AC units older than 20 years old.
