Home Air Tightness

With Phoenix attics reaching 150+ degrees in the summer, it is important to seal off the attic plane from the inside conditioned space. Common areas of possible improvement for house air sealing typically exist around fireplaces, dropped soffits, electrical and plumbing penetrations, and other fixtures that are in the ceilings of homes. That being said, it is very important that are homes are not too tight without proper ventilation, so we've listed the most important considerations before air sealing your home.

Considerations:
  1. Home's Air Tightness
  2. Seal Before You Insulate
  3. Air Quality Sources
  4. Proper Ventilation

Home's Air Tightness

Your home's air tightness must be carefully balanced with it's natural leakage or an additional source of ventilation is required for the health and safety of its occupants. Green ID will calculate your home's required amount of ventilation and compare it to your home's actual air leakage measured by a blower door test.

Seal Before You Insulate

Before adding insulation to your attic and (literally) burying any chance of finding sources of air leakage, it is a unique opportunity to tighten up your home...that is if your home needs air sealing (see topic above). Unlike a ski slope, it is an energy auditor's cornerstone not to disturb fresh insulation if we don't have to and it would be a shame to go through blown-in insulation after it is installed.

Air Quality Sources

Why is the air in our homes and indoor spaces more polluted than outside? Part of the problems contributing to poor indoor air quality are dirty filters and the connect between our attics and interior space. Not many people realize the pressures created every time the heating and cooling system kicks on brings dirty attic air through our ductwork and around small penetrations and holes in the attic. If you are concerned about your air quality, contact Green ID for a certified home energy audit today.
